What is a triode and how to identify its electrode?

Semiconductor triodes are also known as "transistor triodes " .Two mutually interactable PN junctions are fabricated on a single crystal of semiconductor germanium or silicon to form a PNP (or NPN) structure. The middle N zone (or P zone) is called the base zone, and the another two zones are called the emitter zone and the collector zone. Each of the three sections has an electrode lead, which is called the base (B), the emitter (E) and the collector. (C). The triode can function as amplification, oscillation or switching in the circuit.

Transistor housings are typically packaged in plastic and metal. The metal is packaged for the convenience of heat dissipation. The current flowing through the high-power triode is generally large, and the heat is relatively serious. The circuit symbol of the triode is "Q" or "VT", and the triode is polar. Transistor models are available in PNP and NPN versions.

Identification of the emitter on the metal-encapsulated triode: Hold the triode in the hand so that the pin is outward, the protruding label is up, and the pin on the left side of the tag is the emitter (the first pin).

Identification of the emitter of the plastic triode: The plastic packaged triode has a flat surface, holding the triode so that the plane faces itself, and the first pin (emitter) is the leftmost pin. This pin must be inserted  near the mark point on the board. Sometimes the emitter is marked with the letter "E" on the plane of the E-tube.

Some power transistors can be directly inserted into the board, and others require a layer of insulation between the component body and the board, and then tightened with screws. When the power transistor is inserted into the board, the word on the component body must be up.

Some metal-encapsulated triodes have metal clips or metal magazines to prevent ESD (static-sensitive). Metal springs are taken out after insertion, and metal clips are taken out before insertion. The shape of the triode is shown in the figure.
