What is a three-terminal regulator integrated circuit and IC socket?

In practical circuit applications, sometimes there will exist unstable voltages. In this case, it is necessary to convert the unstable DC voltage into a stable DC voltage. The commonly used voltage regulator IC is three-terminal regulator integrated circuit

The integrated regulators commonly used in circuits are mainly 78XX series, 79XX series, adjustable integrated regulator LM317 or LM337.

The 78XX series and 79XX series are fixed three-terminal regulators. The output voltages are 5V, 6V, 9V, 15V, 18V, 24V, etc., and the maximum current reaches 1.5A. In practical applications, when the output current is large, a large enough heat sink should be installed on the three-terminal integrated voltage regulator circuit., which is usually fastened to the circuit board with screws. The shape of the regulator integrated circuit is shown below.

IC socket (Socket)

The use of the IC socket is to facilitate the IC replacement, without soldering, you can directly replace it. The IC socket is polarized and its polarity mark is the "U" shaped slot on the end of the IC socket. It must be inserted against the polarity mark on the board when inserted. When soldering the IC socket, insert all the pins of the IC socket into the pad holes. The regulator shown above can be directly plugged into the corresponding IC socket for use. The outline of the IC socket is shown below.
